A Morning in the Bush
We had an awesome morning in the bush collecting and gathering interesting objects from the ground. The children had lots of fun hunting out special items for them to take home and this created lots of questions and conversations. Then it was time for a picnic under the big tree and a story. What a cool way to spend a day; exploring, investigating and hunting for treasures. Supporting curiosity is vital to encouraging children's learning. I think we might have a group of budding young scientists on our hands!!!

Exploring Ice as a Matter at Playgroup.
Is the ice cold on your mouth?
One of the 'big; ideas behind simple science of water is that water ia matter, and matter is any physical thing that takes up space. Water is significant because it is the only matter that exists naturally in all three states: solid, liquid and gas.

From a tiny Seed a plant will Grow.
Step one: putting the soil into the seed containers.
Step two: making sure our seeds are covered with soil, then giving them a drink with worm wees, from the worm farm.
The children at playgroup planted swan plants and sunflower seeds.
This interest has orginated from the children observing the monarch caterpillars
on the swan plant at the Tamatea playgroup. By engaging in their interest the co-ordinators have developed a life science focus that we are running over the next term, introducing new experiences that promote exploration using all their senses.

Keep an eye out for the giant sunflower contest that is taking place at your child's educarers environment. Through participating in this science experience they are also gaining mathmatical concepts with measuring the growth of their sunflowers.

Our Week with the School Kids
The school children had a blast at the show. They had a couple of rides each and a turn on the side shows. There was face painting, animals to pat and a Ronald Mcdonald magic show. It was a great way to spend the day. Thursday we were off to Keirunga Gardens for an explore round the bush and a treasure hunt. It was cool to see the children working together to solve the clues and break the secret code. Thanks for the awesome week everyone, I look forward to doing it again in January 2012 :)
